Health & Altitude
Most travelers cope well with Bhutan's altitude (Thimphu: 2,300 m; high passes: 5,240 m). Arrive 1–2 days early to acclimatize. Drink water constantly.
- Meds: Consult doctor about Diamox (Acetazolamide).
- Symptoms: Headache, nausea, fatigue. We monitor this closely.
- Vaccines: Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, Tetanus. No Malaria in highlands.

Don't bother with: Expensive camera gear (if casual), too many clothes (laundry available), heavy guidebooks.
Money & Currency
Currency: Ngultrum (Nu), pegged 1:1 to Indian Rupee (INR).
- Cash: Bring USD ($100 bills, clean/new) to exchange. ATMs in Paro/Thimphu work with Visa/Mastercard (small fee).
- Cards: Accepted in major hotels/shops. Useless in villages.
- INR: Indian Rupee accepted (notes ≤ 500 only).
Tips: Guide ($5-10/day), Driver ($3-5/day). Not mandatory but appreciated.
Connectivity
- SIM Card: Buy at Paro Airport (TashiCell or B-Mobile). ~$3 USD.
- WiFi: Available in hotels. Unreliable in remote areas.
- Trekking: No signal for days. Enjoy the detox.
